Mini-splits are one of the best upgrades you can make to a home. Quiet. Efficient. Flexible. Affordable. Especially when you understand the advantage of installing mini-splits throughout your entire home, which makes your system a 3, 4, or 5 “stage” system. This is where your significant energy savings come from and can drop your a/c bill by 35 – 50%! These 7 mini-split install tips will save you some major aggravation if you are new to the installation process.
Be aware, they’re also one of the easiest systems to destroy with a rushed install (not to scare you or anything…but yeah, a little)
Everything in this guide comes from real installs, real failures, and real callbacks. Some of these tips are beginner-safe. Some are advanced. All of them prevent expensive problems and tons of aggravation.

Tip #1 – Crack the Caps on in indoor unit and check the Factory Pressure immediately
Difficulty: Beginner
Risk if skipped: Installing a bad coil onto your wall/never attempting DIY again
As soon as you open the indoor unit, slightly loosen (do NOT remove) the refrigerant caps. You should hear pressure escape.
If there is no pressure, stop immediately close, the box, and exchange the unit. That coil left the factory leaking. Installing it guarantees a hatred of my blog. Neither of us wants that.
This one check can save you from ripping your hair out or the unit off the wall. Literally “ripping”. Maybe with a pry bar, or a track hoe.

Tip #2 – Design the Drain So It Can Never Air-Lock
Difficulty: Beginner
Risk if skipped: Flooded walls and ceilings / unhappy life
Gravity drains do not work if air gets trapped. No traps. No “bellies”. No uphill runs.
One tiny air bubble can shut down drainage completely. The unit can be perfectly level and still flood your wall.
Rules:
- Continuous downhill slope
- No internal traps
- No horizontal sags
- Exit clean and open, a proper termination
If water can’t escape freely, it will escape somewhere else (overflow inside the home). A problem-free installation involves the drain running straight through the wall and then straight down the OUTSIDE of the home. No seams, no horizontal slope, no issues!

Tip #3 – Route Copper and Drain Straight Out the Back (No Internal Chase)
Difficulty: Beginner
Risk if skipped: Inaccessible indoor leaks & nightmare repairs/service

From the factory, copper is laid accross the lower back side of the wall cassette in a rear chase so it can exit the opposite side.
But 99% of installs should NOT use that chase.
Correct method:
- Tie in the control wire before hanging the unit
- Lift/bend the copper out of the rear “chase” so it will run straight through the wall when the cassette is mounted on the wall bracket.
- Let copper, drain, and control wire go straight through the wall together
- Keep all connections outside the home
Some units ship with the drain on the wrong side for this procedure. Beginners think they’re stuck and connect the drain or copper inside the back of the unit, or drill a second hole through the wall. Wrong! Don’t do this! You should have NO connections inside the home, and only one 2.5 inch hole through the wall.
The drain stub is swappable. Move it to the copper side and avoid indoor couplings completely. I use the flat end of a 12″ long, 1/8″ drill bit to carefully push the plug back into place when you swap the other side. You will see a small hole in the rubber drain plug to do this. (I will make a video of this soon!)

Tip #4 – Deep Vacuum + Micron Gauge + Nitrogen Flow
Difficulty: Intermediate → Advanced
Risk if skipped: Shortened system life/ premature compressor failure
A “vacuum” is not just running a pump for 15 minutes and hoping for the best. You must verify moisture removal with a micron gauge. If you do not use a micron gauge, run the vacuum pump for AT LEAST one hour.
Why this matters:
- Moisture turns into acid inside the system, shortening life and efficiency
Correct process:
- 1st – Pressure test with nitrogen
- 2nd – release nitrogen and evacuate 500 microns or less
- 3rd – Break with nitrogen
- 4th – Evacuate again to 500 microns or less
- 5th – Add extra refrigerant required for the oz/ft for each foot of lineset over the factory charge amount (as described in the instruction book that came with your heat-pump). Then release the factory charge into the lineset/evap. coil
**The nitrogen break is NOT crucial (3rd & 4th), as long as you let the vacuum pump run down to less than 500 microns and hold for 10 min., and you do not get a rise over 800 microns. If you are a professional or making money on side jobs, do the nitrogen break for your clients who pay the proper money for the professional installation. (watch for upcoming videos)

**This is an empty tank. You will need to fill and will end up with a used one because welding suppliers only change out the tanks, they do NOT fill them (anywhere I have ever known anyway) so you are better off just purchasing the tank there for about 80 bucks which will come full.

Tip #5 – Dedicated Electrical Circuit with Proper Wire & Breaker
Difficulty: Beginner → Intermediate
Risk if skipped: Board failure due to power surges / incorrect amperage available
Mini-splits do not belong on shared circuits with outlets, lights, or any other shared electrical circuit.
Rules:
- Dedicated circuit
- Correct breaker size
- Correct wire gauge
Ensure you are sizing your wire and breaker from the nomenclature on the system. Install a non-fusable pull out disconnect for value and simplicity. Control wire should be 14 gauge stranded 3-wire PLUS ground (4 wires total). Tighten terminals and ensure the wire is secure by pulling on them after you tighten.
Loose power kills inverter boards. Shared circuits cause nuisance trips. Fires don’t send warning emails. (I have never seen a mini-split fire, but I am SURE they exist (like UFO’s)

Tip #6 – Indoor Flare Strategy + Proper Torque
**Flair/copper connections is the single most important thing to get right to avoid headache and wasted time/money for a DIYer – PAY ATTENTION DEAR READER ** PRACTICE THIS STEP**

Difficulty: Beginner → Advanced
Risk if skipped: Slow leaks or cracked fittings / a huge DIYer problem
Beginner path:
- Keep factory flare at the indoor unit (run copper from the air handler to the outdoor unit with excess copper at the outdoor unit to be cut and flaired there)
- Make custom flares at the outdoor unit only

Adjustable Torque Wrench for HVAC Repair, Maintenance $49.99 Good reviews for a non-digital, practical, adjustable solution

Hilmor 1963826 Digital Adjustable Torque Wrench for Mini-Split, HVAC Tools and Equipment, Digital LCD Screen, Light and Sound Indicators $199.99 Keep in mind, although this may be a manufacturer specification and a recommendation, I honestly have never used a torque wrench on my flare’s (probably why I have had some leaks).
Intermediate path:
- Torque every flare
- Nitrogen pressure test before vacuum (or just make sure you use a good micron gauge (see other “recommended tool sections))
Advanced pro path:
- Remove indoor flares entirely (connect the copper at the outdoor unit and run to the indoor stub where you cut off the excess AND the flair on the in door unit copper stubs. Coupling and braze here, which keeps the ONLY flair you will have at the outdoor unit, and it will be a factory-made flair. (Torque wrench to specifications)
- Braze the indoor joints. To eliminate oxygen during brazing, and prevent carbon scale, run a 3psi nitrogen flow through the refrigerant system while brazing. (This nitrogen step is WIDELY NOT used by novices and professionals alike. Watch for my blog post on brazing techniques or check out https://www.YouTube.com/@DIYACinsider (videos coming soon!)
- Leave only factory flares at the condenser (torque to specifications)
Why this matters:
In case of a leak, you want the repair process as easy as possible. Trust me!
Tools required: B-tank, turbo torch (or similar), brazing rod, swedge tool or couplings, copper cutter, nitrogen tank and regulator.

I am showing you the 2 common sizes of cutters, but only one from each of two of the brands I recommend. These cut good, and more importantly, do not fall apart after 10 uses. You can search around and pick the size from the brand you like best, but try to stick with Ridgid, Lennox, Klein, or another name brand. Everyone has their own opinions, but these will all last. Ridgid is my go to. Keep in mind, if you get a good flaring tool set, it may come with a copper cutter.

If you only want to buy one, get this one. It cuts from 1/8 to 1 &1/8, and the angled back really helps for tight areas.

Klein provides good, durable tools. This medium size cutter is no exception!

This list of torch kits will be updated. For now I can only honestly refer you to what I know, and for beginners, and what I use, Turbo Torch is an easy to handle, professional brazing set up.
I also have been using an off-brand which has held up very well over the past couple of years.
For DIYers who want to eliminate the flares from the indoor unit, you can also check out the map torch kits but be cautious. From what I understand, many of them DO NOT produce enough heat. Once this blog gets rolling, I will do some testing and reviews for them but for now, I am sure there are plenty of videos and reviews to check out.

Tip #7 – Line Set Protection (Kinks, Insulation, Routing, UV)
Difficulty: Beginner
Risk if skipped: Performance loss and callback city
Line sets fail slowly and expensively.
Protect them from:
- Kinks
- Tight bends
- Missing or unprotected insulation
- Sun/UV damage to drain and/or lineset insulation
Use proper bending methods, insulate the lines completely, and protect from weather and UV rays. Mini-Splits come with tape like rolls of non-stick material. This is the UV ray insulation and drain line protectant. Use this and secure it with tape AND zip ties, or it will fall off after a short couple of years. Use quality UV-resistant Zip ties.
A crushed suction line chokes the capacity. Tight bends stress compressors. Ensure the lines are not kinked. Use copper benders for the larger size copper (1/2″ and UP). Spring benders are great, but don’t work when you are using factory flares because you can not slide them over the flair fittings onto the copper, so keep that in mind. #BONUS TIP – Coastal Corrosion Protection
Difficulty: Advanced
Applies only to salt-air regions
If you’re near the ocean:
- Degrease the factory oil from the unit cabinet and the coil (outdoor only)
- Wash with Dawn dish detergent, being very careful not to get the board or any wiring wet
- Dry fully
- Apply coil-safe corrosion coating (confirm it will not hinder the heat transfer)
Skipping this in coastal zones shortens equipment life dramatically. Inland installs do not need this.

Final Word
Mini-splits don’t fail because they’re “cheap.”
They fail because one of these seven steps, or others, was rushed, skipped, or guessed.
